Wireless or Wearable Bedwetting Alarm

October 09, 2009 1 min read

ZM asks, "My son is 12. Is it better for him to use a wireless or wearable bedwetting alarm?

ZM, both styles of alarms are equally effective in alerting your son when he needs to get up to go to the bathroom. My question to you is, "Which alarm is he most likely to use consistently over the next few months?" Some things to consider are:

1. Wireless alarm (Rodger wireless, Malem wireless)

Pros:

  • nothing to wear attached to your shoulder
  • can go to bed without a shirt
  • have to get out of bed to turn alarm off
  • easy to set up

Cons:

  • require that laundry be done regularly (Rodger)
  • can experience wireless interference from your household

2. Wearable alarm (Malem Ultimate, Dry-Me, Clippo)

Pros:

  • sound comes from unit located on shoulder, close to ear
  • some units provide both a sound and vibratory stimulus on the shoulder
  • use own close fitting underwear

Cons:

  • take a few minutes longer to attach
  • sensor cord is located under shirt next to skin

Your son is old enough to be involved in his alarm choice. Review the pros and cons of each type of alarm and let him choose which one he would rather use. He can view the alarms and listen to the sounds they make to help him with his choice.
