5 stars, I would buy this 10x again!!
By Tee from Canada on 2016-11-18
Cons: no volume setting
We first tried the Malem alarm with sounds only (this one wasn't available at that time). The sounds scared my 8 year old son the first time it went off and he was so scared of it that we never used it again. THEN they came out with this RECORDABLE alarm....it's fantastic!! Took some convincing that this alarm is not the same as the first. We got my son to choose what he wanted it to say and his dad recorded it. Worked like a charm from the first night!! The alarm went off once per night, 5 nights in a row....then he started waking up on his own before the alarm went off. We have been alarm-free (AND DRY!) for 28 days now.
5 stars, voice recording key to our success
By Mom of Three from Spring, TX on 2015-04-21
Pros: Can Record My Voice, Easy for child to use, Sturdy, Nice and loud, Great Instructions
Best Uses: If Alarm Doesnt Wake Son
Trained him for two weeks as suggested, now my child uses the product independently. He feels so much better about himself not that he is not using a pull up and waking up wet. He was such a heavy sleeper that another alarm we tried didn't wake him, but the sound of my voice works right away!
5 stars, Great results
By Mother of a 6 year old boy from Florida on 2015-03-13
This worked great for our 6 year old son.
3 stars, Too Alarming
By Pull Ups No More Please from Texas on 2014-11-12
Pros: Idea Of Product Great
Cons: Broke After 6th Use
Best Uses: Wake Up Alarm To Go Potty
We like the product and would have continued to use it if it hadn't reversed its alarm after the 6th use. Now when the red tab is up the alarm goes on so that when we reattach it to my child's pull-up it won't stop. We tried changing the settings, rearranging the batteries and attaching to a different fabric but alarm still would not go off if red tab was down (which it needs to be in order to clamp it onto anything). I will have to try to return the product and hopefully receive a new one that isn't faulty.
4 stars, It worked for my son
By Your Raisin's Daddy from Ridgewood, NJ on 2014-09-02
Pros: Very Sensitive Sensor, Vibration Works Great
Cons: Cable Gets In The Way, a little bulky and heavy, Cable Gets Int The Way
The alarm unit is a little bulky and heavy, it hangs off the sleep shirt, but doesn't seem to bother my child too much. The sensor is very sensitive, that is mostly a pro, but once it gets wet, I had a hard time drying it so it doesn't trigger the alarm, doing it in the middle of the night isn't fun. About a month into using the alarm (using vibrate alarm exclusively -- I can't stand the audible alarm), my child is mostly dry! That is really impressive for a kid that's persistently peed every night at least once since day 1. If I were to do it again, I'd most likely get a Malem, but the lighter/smaller model that does vibration.
5 stars, Best alarm we've had
By Mom at the end of her rope from Nashville, TN on 2014-04-11
Pros: Vibration Plus Message, Record Message Own Voice, Two-step Shut Off
Best Uses: For Sound Sleepers
This alarm works really well for my 10 and 11 year old boys. The alarm alone versions didn't work well because they are such sound sleepers. With my voice and the vibration, they are able to get up. The only problem (not the alarms) is that they still sometimes detach and turn off without getting up!
5 stars, After nearly 10 years, my son is dry now
By buckeye from Columbus, Oh on 2013-12-03
Cons: Tricky For A Youngster
We had been told for nearly 10 years that my son would grow out of bed wetting and to do nothing but wait. We have a strong family history of it and as he approached his 10th birthday, we couldn't wait any longer. He was heartbroken that his 2 year-old baby brother was dry at night and he wasn't. We decided to try the recordable alarm because he is a sound sleeper. We thought hearing me yell his name and to wake up might work better than a buzz or bell or anything else. For the first couple of weeks, we had no results, then about week 3 or 4, he was DRY!!! It has been 4 months now and he's had only 2 accidents after wetting the bed for nearly 10 years every night. It is is nothing short of a miracle. He was old enough to manage it all himself, but a younger child would definitely need help. We used "white noise" in the other bedrooms so that no one else work up with the alarm and that worked fine. Despite the instructions, we put a pullup over his underwear so that the alarm would go off, but he wouldn't have a mess. I had decided if it didn't work in the first month, I'd have him just wear underwear with no pullup, but it worked before that happened. You do have to have underwear on underneath though or I don't think the alarm will work well.
2 stars, Not loud enough to wake disabled child
By Frustrated Mom from Ohio on 2013-10-26
Pros: Functions properly
Cons: Alarm should be louder
I purchased this alarm with high hopes of attaining nighttime dryness for my 11-year-old son. He suffered a brain injury at a young age and has never been able to stay dry all night. Unfortunately, though the alarm functions as it ought, the alarm is simply not loud enough to wake him. We tried the alarm feature with the 8 randomized alarms, as well as the recordable feature with my voice telling him to wake up and go into the bathroom. Even the vibration did nothing to wake him. I could not hear the alarm from my room just down the hall, even with the bedroom doors open. My 8-year-old son who shares a room with his brother had to come get me every time it went off during the night. After 6 weeks we have had absolutely no improvement. My son continues to thoroughly soak through his pajamas and sheets 2-3 times per night. The purchase was a waste of money.
3 stars, Good, but not as good as I expected
By Doctor Dave from Berthoud, Colorado on 2013-07-29
Pros: Alarm Sound Selections, Vibrate mode, Voice Recorder Is Great
Cons: Alarm Sounds Not Pleasant, Not 100 Effective
I think this is a good product, but for the price is a bit cheaply built. The underwear clip is small and a bit difficult to attach. It's the only bedwetting alarm I have used, so I can't make a comparison with others. I would recommend it, but it could have been better engineered. It does what it's supposed to do, but I would not be surprised if there is a better product out there.
5 stars, Great training tool for dev. delayed kid
By Mom of a very proud potty-trained boy from Greenwood, IN on 2013-04-20
Pros: Voice Programmable, Great Customer Service, For Day Or Night Use, Voice Vibrate Or Tone
Cons: A little expensive
Best Uses: Daytime Potty Training
My son is 10 years old and developmentally delayed due to Down Syndrome. I didn't think we'd ever get him potty trained... Within two weeks of receiving the voice programmable wetting alarm, he was in big boy underwear all day, every day with only 2-3 accidents in the last month. We could not be more pleased with this alarm!!! It's a great tool for kids who may not recognize the urge to go - it helps them identify when they need to go and it helps them to stop urinating almost immediately because the alarm sensor is very sensitive when placed appropriately. We are already planning the next step, to address nighttime wetting, which will likely require that we buy a few additional supplies. The only downside is that the system is a bit costly; however, for a parent who's been trying to potty train her child for LITERALLY years, it is money well spent!
5 stars, WHY didn't I do this SOONER!?
By CookieMama from Portland, OR on 2013-02-19
Pros: Easy to use, Sound Vibration, Motivating, Small, LOUD
My son (who is almost 12) has wet every night his entire life. After 1 week with the alarm, he stopped wetting entirely and has been dry for a whole month now. I think his brain just needed a little training and he totally gets it. I'm kicking myself for not buying a alarm 3 years ago. I was so apprehensive about getting an alarm, but it was simple enough that he did it on his own and so effective. My advice now? Don't wait.
5 stars, Dont wait!!
By Happy Mom of Happy Son from Missouri on 2013-01-03
Pros: Variety of sounds, Discreet, User friendly
We tried everything to help my 10year old son wake up dry. Limiting drinks, watching diet, even the medicine didnt work. We just kept hoping it would happen, but it didn't. Finally after he had to go to 5th grade camp with pull ups we decided to give the alarm a try. WOW!!!!! He wore it for 17 days. It was so easy for him to hook up and reset during the night. The safety pin was a little tricky but once it was clipped to his shirt he was good to go. The vibration was a great feature to have also. It really woke him up! My advice, dont' wait. My only regret was that I waited this long to try the alarm.....
5 stars, 10 years of buying diapers over-at last!
By I'm Finally Getting Some Sleep from Texas on 2012-10-22
Pros: Reasonably Priced, Effective, Easy to use, Child friendly
I purchased the Malem Ultimate Recordable approximately a month ago for my 9-year-old son, who is turning 10 next week. My son is an extremely heavy sleeper and has not had a dry night in his life. We have tried limiting liquids prior to bedtime, waking him several times during the night to go to the bathroom (sleep walking zombie) and overnight pullups. Even when we took him to the bathroom 4 times a night he still would often wet the bed. When he wore the overnight pullups sometimes it would still leak through to the sheets and mattress cover. Needless to say we weren't making ANY progress and his father and I were exhausted every morning. The first week we received the alarm we had to help him to the bathroom when the alarm went off. If his underwear were slightly wet, then we had extra underwear ready in the bathroom to change into if necessary. The alarm went off approximately 3 times a night the first week. Now at week 4 the alarm goes off at most once a night, and many nights not at all. My husband and I no longer have to assist him when he needs to get up, and often we hear him get up prior to the alarm going off- THIS NEVER HAPPENED IN THE PAST! Most importantly for our family is the confidence it has brought about in our child! The alarm quickly pays for itself when no longer purchasing overnight pullups or having to wash muliple sheets/bedding and clothes every morning. I highly recommend the MALEM alarm. For extra heavy sleepers you cannot go wrong with the recordable alarm!
5 stars, Product works very well, I'm impressed
By relieved mum from Sydney, Australia on 2012-07-30
Pros: Highly effective, Compact, Easy to use, Good Volume
I was quite desperate, my daughter was nearly 8 years old and had NEVER had a dry night in her life. With the Malem alarm, she was dry within 6 weeks, no kidding! I can't say enough about the product, I just wish I had tried it sooner. The voice alarm is a lot gentler on the ears than a loud ringing alarm which we had tried before and she was terrified of and refused to wear it. Thank you, I have a very happy and confident 8 year old who can now have sleepovers without any embarrassment.
5 stars, LIFECHANGING PRODUCT!!!!!
By Happy Family from Kansas on 2012-01-20
Pros: Small compact unit, Child-friendly, LOUD
Our alarm came within a week of ordering it. We began using the alarm on our 9 yr. old son (who has always been an every night bedwetter) on 12/23. At first, he slept thru the alarm & vibrations! Don't despair, because within a few days he was waking up on his own. By the 2 week mark, he had a couple of dry nights. By day 25, he has experienced 6 nights of dry nights! He wakes in the morning at his regular time & uses the bathroom, having held his urine all night long! This alarm somehow awakens the bladder-brain connection! When he has had 2 wks of dry nights, we will alternate using the alarm every other night, as the makers recommend. If all goes as we think it will, he will celebrate with a sleepover!!! Wish we had done this 3 years ago...
5 stars, Excellent
By MomOf3Boys from St. Louis, MO on 2011-12-05
Cons: Safety pin ruined pjs
I have no idea why this product worked but it definitely did. In the beginning the monitor went off every night. It woke up everyone in the house except for my son. We dragged him to the potty half or all the way asleep. Even at this point it was a help because we would catch him with only wet underwear not wet sheets and blankets. Then about a month after we got the monitor it stopped going off. His bed has been dry every night since then! I am still making him wear it for a little longer because we are going on some trips...but actually I think he doesn't need it anymore. For us it was definitely worth the money! Thank you!
5 stars, It's a wonderful product
By Jenny from Cochranville, PA on 2011-12-01
Pros: Easy to use, Quick results
My 10 year old struggled with bedwetting every night. It started to effect her confidence. We saw results within three days of using this product. It was easy for my child to use and effective when the alarm sounded she was easily awaken and able to control her night time bedwetting.
5 stars, Malem Alarm Works!
By Fozzy from California on 2011-10-22
Pros: Best for child and parent, Effective
Best Uses: Bed wetting
We tried many different ways to deal with bed wetting. We asked friends, family, doctors but none of their suggestions worked. This product that worked. I only wish we'd tried it sooner. Our child is happier and more confident now that this is behind us. I am a little stunned that our pediatrician didn't mention this and he is really good in all other respects. It took a bit of patience but we began to see success inside of ten days and it only got better from there.
5 stars, Wow! Just wow!
By Mom of four from San Antonio, TX on 2011-08-10
It took about a week of using this alarm to take our never-dry six-and-a-half year-old to dry every night. The alarm was audible from her room to ours (down an average hallway) and woke her readily. I used a recording of my own voice telling her it was time to go potty. It has now been three months since we stopped using the alarm and we have had no accidents. Highly, highly recommended!
4 stars, Give it a try, it worked for us
By Momma T from Ashburn, VA on 2011-07-13
Pros: Successful, Economical, Personalized message
We used this for our 6 year old son who would have accidents almost 6 out of 7 nights a week. We felt he was old enough now that we could give this a shot. It was incredibly effective for us and after 2 weeks he didn't need it anymore (it may take longer for other children). We think for our son, he just needed the encouragement and to think about getting up at night and perhaps that's why it worked so quickly. The voice recording feature made the alarm bigger, but it was definitely worth it. He would fall asleep stressing about what it would be like when the alarm work him up, but when I played my personalized message for him it made him smile. You will have to get up at night to help your child, but this was not a problem for me. After a few nights, he started talking about not wanting to wear it anymore, but we made him try anyway. Soon enough, he didn't need it anymore. I think it's economical, because with the cost of overnight pull ups/month, I figured if this cut down the cost of pull ups by 3 months, it would pay for itself. And it certainly did. He had a few lapses while we were out traveling or if we've been too busy and he's not in a normal routine. Keep the pull ups around a little longer just in case. If you are looking to help your child stay dry all night, and ready to make an effort, I would definitely recommend this product.
4 stars, It worked!
By becky - happy mom from minnetonka, MN on 2011-02-27
My daughter wore this to bed for a couple of weeks. The recorded voice of her sister talking to her got her up to go to the bathroom. For another week, she wore it but it never went off so she was dry That was it - now we have lent it to a friend.
5 stars, What a Success!
By Proud Parents from IL on 2010-09-13
Our daughter is six years old and never had a dry night. Once we started the Malem Recordable Alarm, she was very excited to stop wearing Underjams. When we first started using the alarm we would hear it before she would and we would have to wake her up. However, it must have startled her enough because when we would wake her up she hadn't completely wet the changing pad we put on over her bed sheet. So we'd take her to the bathroom, replace the changing pad and she'd be great the rest of the night. After about a week she was waking up on her own when the alarm would go off and she'd get to the bathroom in time. I would say we used the alarm for about four weeks total and now with no alarm she can wake herself up if she needs to go to the bathroom. Some nights she doesn't have to get up at all! This is a wonderful product and I and so happy how quickly it worked! Our daughter is happy and this has really boosted her self confidence! I highly recommend this product!
5 stars, Great product to train spec. needs kids
By mom to special needs child from Flemington, NJ on 2010-08-30
Pros: Easy to use and care for, Sturdy, Well constructed, Voice recording feature
Cons: None so far
Best Uses: Day or night training
My 6.5 year old daughter has ASD and sensory processing problems. She was still not fully potty trained. Her teachers were bringing her to the potty on a schedule. At home she had many accidents. I purchased this particular model because of the voice recording feature. First, I didn't want the alarm to scare her and second, I wanted it to be a voice command so she could follow the direction to go to the bathroom and learn the feeling of when she had to go. This product worked as I hoped it would within days of using it and I loved that it vibrated in conjunction with the recording. A little extra motivation. I recorded my voice saying "Name of child, go to the potty". When it first went off, my dd just sat there. I led her to the bathroom and she actually finished her business in the toilet. Then over time as soon as the alarm sounded she walked herself to the bathroom. And now, the alarm barely sounds. As the days and weeks have passed, she continues to stay dry. I have yet to tackle night time but I'm sure it will be just as successful. Good luck to all.
3 stars, non-selectable sounds
By Sue from Cincinnati, OH on 2010-08-16
I haven't begun using the alarm with my son, but I wanted to post this comment in case someone else was debating between alarms. This alarm does not allow you to select between the 8 sounds. I can see this as being a benefit so that the child will not become accustomed to one sound; however, there were a few sounds I didn't like, so I bought this alarm thinking that I could just choose the ones I preferred. The only choice you have with this alarm is to use your recorded message, the built in 8 random playing sounds, or just the vibration mode.
4 stars, Better Than the Ultimate 1S
By wesesq from Scottsdale, AZ on 2010-08-11
Pros: Strong vibration, Flashing light, LOUD
Cons: Pink Color, bulky
A few years ago, I purchased the Malem Ultimate 1S and achieved good results with my then 6-year old son. Unfortunately, after a few months, the volume on the alarm seemed to decrease markedly, and the alarm no longer woke my son. My son is now motivated to become dry, so I decided to purchase the recordable alarm to have the recordable option. We are on our second month of using this alarm and have gone from zero dry nights, to 50% dry the first month, to, perhaps 75% dry. I was concerned that my son would balk because this alarm is decidedly pink in color, but he didn't. Also this alarm is bulky, about twice as thick as the Ultimate 1S which some children might not like. My theory, though, is that my son may be somewhat aware of the presence of the alarm while he is sleeping, which may be helping him. The alarm is loud when placed close to the ear, and the vibration is very strong. I haven't needed to use the recordable option because this alarm is hard to ignore. Also, the clip seems easier to use than my old one. I would recommend this alarm.
4 stars, This Recordable Alarm worked for our son
By Working Mom from Virginia on 2010-04-12
Pros: Voice, Recordable
Cons: Challenging buttons, Hard to open back
Best Uses: Motivated child, "Older" young kids
Recordable voice is the best feature. The alarm noise is crazy and I am sure would work for heavy sleepers. Our son didn't need that, and we thought that would be too scary to wake up with such a loud buzzer! With the recordable voice we were able to have some fun and record himself and us telling him to "wake up and go potty". He has responded well, and after about 4 weeks...no more wetting at night!!
5 stars, baffling results!
By Ace Wilde from Des moines, Iowa on 2009-07-23
Pros: Personal recording, Effective, A God send
Cons: Didnt vibrate wrecording
I'm amazed at how fast this worked! We've tried everything to help my son to not have to wear a pull up. Nothing worked. Started using this every night, with a recorded "wake up and go to the bathroom," within 3 weeks he wakes up and goes to the bathroom. He's had 18 days of perfect nights. It's incredible!
3 stars, Button too hard to push
By Bobby from Texas on 2009-05-30
Cons: Clip loose, Buton hard to depress, Kid takes it off
Button too hard to depress, so my child removes it every night. She does this in her sleep and is not aware of the removal. The other model with 8 sounds/buzzer had a better button. Wondering if mine is defective?
4 stars, Good device but a bit more than needed
By Happy mom from Vancouver, Wa on 2009-05-25
Pros: Vibration plus alarm, Easy to attach, Easy to remove, Color Choices
Cons: Heavy, Pain to adjust settings, Cost
Best Uses: Wakes kiddo quickly
I was very impressed with how quickly it helped my 6yr old learn to be dry through the night. It was a real confidence booster for her. The info sheet was great and helped us to have realistic expectations. We were prepared to have her wear this for 8 or more weeks, but I am please to say that within 10 days she was dry on average of 6 nights a week. The times she did wet was a few drops and then quickly awoken by alarm. We no longer use the alarm and she is still consistently dry. We are very please with this product! In hindsight the alarm/vibration model would have been all we needed. She slept right through the recordable message. Maybe if the message setting also vibrated it would have awoken her. This one is larger and heavier than the other models and really seemed to hang and pull. This alarm is pretty pricey but if you want a sure thing then this is it!
5 stars, worked for my son!
By Happy customer from DeKalb, IL on 2009-03-30
My son is 12, almost 13, and is special needs/autism. I was encouraged by the other mom who bought this alarm for her 15 year old. My son went from diapers to dry all night within 2 weeks with this, and we kept using the alarm long after that point to reinforce. Then finally we made the plunge and removed it at night. This has been such a wonderful thing for him and us. Before this, we tried every method on the planet for kids with autism. They didn't work for nighttime. It left us in a state of despair. We also couldn't take him in the car because he was not trained for long-time control. In the last 2 months we have not had any incidents there either. I really don't know if the voice part was what worked, but it was good for us to set the alarm to the word "get up and go to the bathroom". But we still had to be there when the alarm went off. IN fact, I think he responded more to the vibration setting than the voice. We started out with the voice command and only when we went to the buzzer was he really keeping dry. He wanted to keep the buzzer from going off because it startled/tickled him. Anyway, I'm a true believer now, because this has changed our life. Our son is so proud.
