Special Situations - I Need Something to Detect Sweating or Leaking

Families sometimes mention that they want a moisture sensing device to detect sweating with hypoglycemic episodes or leaking from their family member’s feeding tube, IV line or other unattended liquid port. Most alarms will detect any fluid, not only urine. It’s most important to choose a device in which the sensor can be positioned exactly where you need it to be to detect the wetness most quickly.

You should experiment with the best placement for quick fluid detection and should continue to be attentive in high risk situations. This serves as a back-up only and does not take the place of close monitoring.

    Bedwetting Alarm

The Malem Bedside pad style alarm can be placed under the sheet to detect generalized sweating or leaking. It can be positioned directly under the area that you would expect leaking to be detected first. Wetness that crosses two of the sensing strips causes the alarm to sound.

The WetCall pad is an economical solution that could also be used for this purpose. However, this pad does require pressure as well as wetness to sound an alarm. Dripping fluids would not trigger the alarm. The patient must be positioned on the pad while the wetting occurs.

    Bedwetting Alarm

The Malem auditory wearable alarm could detect drops of wetness from clothing, including profuse sweating that soaks clothes. The optional flat Standard could be placed in a t-shirt pocket or underwear pouch. Position the sensor close to the skin, where you expect the most moisture. You need to experiment with the best placement and should continue to be attentive in high risk situations. This serves as a back-up only and does not take the place of close monitoring.
